Looking for a sun-trap in Edinburgh's Old Town? Nestled in the heart of this hub for history and creativity is Scotts Kitchen, an all-day dining spot with one of the best locations in the city. Scotts benefits from a gorgeous terrace with a south-facing view, catch the rays that Edinburgh albeit rarely gets, while looking onto famous Victoria Street.
The team are proud to have snagged an incredible building, cladded with Edinburgh's iconic grey stone and once inside, expect high ceilings, beautiful original ceilings and stylish decor. With a friendly, tight-knit team, you can expect plenty of atmosphere and a warm welcome, too.
But, the first thing you really need to know about Scotts is the passion and dedication its chefs have for Scottish produce. Crafting a menu from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, they make finding the best suppliers across the country, and getting to know them on a personal level, a priority. Think lobsters caught in East Lothian, Wild Highland venison sourced from farms in Perthshire and grass-fed steak from family-owned butcher, Shaw’s, in Lauder - it's the kind of place foodies obsess over.
On the menu, small plates such as crispy chorizo served with cucumber yoghurt or warm, freshly baked artisan sourdough with Scotts houmous make for lovely starters to share. The traditional, award-winning haggis, neeps and tatties with thyme jus has to be tried, ideally with an optional but recommended dram of 12 year old Glengoyne whisky. Other stand-out dishes include Scotts homemade macaroni cheese with herb crumb, which can be decked out with haggis, chorizo or bacon.
Scotts is also a popular place to enjoy a spot of breakfast, as its open every morning from 9am. The breakfast menu includes a variety of egg breakfasts - poached eggs on toast and a house eggs Benedict, for example - as well as fry ups complete with haggis, tattie scone, sweet and savoury scones, breakfast brioche baps and more.
