SquareMeal Review of Santo Remedio Marylebone

Bronze Award

It’s fair to say, Mexican food is having another moment in 2024, and it’s only fair that one of London’s Mexican OGs joins the party. Santo Remedio has long been beloved in London Bridge and Shoreditch, nailing an effective equation of easy-going Mexican food and excellent cocktails.

Santo Remedio Marylebone has taken up the site that once belonged to ultra-glam fine dining restaurant Xier, and they’ve done a nice job retooling the space. An abundance of potted palms and banana plants softens the edges, and everything is decked out in golden hues, whether it’s the warm timber, woven lampshades or smart mahogany leather banquettes. It’s less tasting menu and more tequila tiki bar, which incidentally, is exactly what we’re here for.

The bar makes a mean spicy Margarita - no surprises there, as we’ve always rated Santo Remedio’s cocktails. On the food front, you have a lot to choose from. Kick things off with tasty guac and house-made totopos whilst you plan your menu strategy.

Tacos is one area where Santo Remedio really excels. There’s an especially good Baja fish taco, kept sustainable by using battered coley, which retains an excellent crunch alongside slaw and a silky chipotle mayo. Tuna tostadas are another must-order, displaying delicate balance between ancho chilli, tamari, Jalapeno and sesame. Pork belly tacos with chicharron and salsa verde will also no doubt be a popular order, and though they deliver an enjoyable hit of fat and salt, they lacked a bit of the refinement of other dishes. The same could be said of a large plate of braised beef cheeks, on a pool of mole rosa, where the beef was perhaps a little over and starting to toughen up.

These are small quibbles though, none of which stopped us demolishing everything - a good sign given the fairly generous portions. With site number three, Santo Remedio is growing into a very dependable group - if you’re in the market for full-throttle tacos, tequila and spicy margs, you’ll be very content here.

About

Santo Remedio Casona & Cantina brings the vibrant and authentic flavors of Mexico to the heart of Marylebone. This marks the third venture by founders Edson Diaz-Fuentes and Natalie Feary, following the successful openings of their Shoreditch and London Bridge locations. The Marylebone restaurant offers an elevated dining experience that blends regional Mexican cuisine with an ambiance inspired by Mexico City’s historic colonial houses, known as casonas.

The menu reflects Edson’s dedication to traditional Mexican cooking, showcasing specialties like guisados—slow-cooked dishes rich in flavor and heritage—and antojitos mexicanos, small hand-pressed corn dishes such as sopes and empanadas. Highlights include lamb barbacoa-stuffed ancho chiles, Cornish venison chop with pipián verde, and vegetarian options featuring black beans, avocado leaves, and Mexican panela-style cheese. The menu also features signature sauces such as mole and pipianes, which pair beautifully with grilled vegetables and proteins.

Edson and his team prioritize high-quality ingredients, including heirloom corn sourced from MasaFina and meats like venison from trusted farms in Cornwall. Diners can also indulge in classic Santo Remedio favorites, such as guacamole topped with grasshoppers, Baja fish tacos, and tuna tostadas, all prepared with an authentic yet approachable flair. These dishes are complemented by a range of innovative cocktails crafted from tequila and mezcal, alongside a curated selection of Mexican wines and beers.

The two-story space accommodates up to 85 diners and is designed to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. On the ground floor, a lively bar serves as the focal point, offering tequila and mezcal cocktails in an inviting setting. Adjacent to the main dining area, "Mesa Santa," an intimate eight-seater private dining room, is adorned with photos from Edson’s travels across Mexico, providing a unique and personal dining experience. Upstairs, the "Salon Santo" offers a private bar and event space that can host up to 60 guests, making it ideal for celebrations, receptions, and gatherings.

Santo Remedio Casona & Cantina is a celebration of Mexican culture, art, and cuisine. With its thoughtfully curated menu, warm and inviting design, and commitment to authenticity, it offers a dining experience that transports guests to the heart of Mexico while embracing the vibrant energy of Central London.
