SquareMeal Review of San Lorenzo

Bronze Award

A lot has changed since Lorenzo and Mara Berni launched San Lorenzo back in 1963, but this über-traditional Italian still goes its own way. A favourite of Princess Di and a go-to destination for the Ab Fab crowd, it comprises a sprawl of sunlit, conservatory-style rooms on different levels, done out in alfresco style with vaulted skylights, canvas umbrellas, pot plants and cheeky modern prints. First-timers may think it looks a tad tatty, but deep-pocketed socialites still come here for plates of zucchini al pesto, spaghetti with lobster, grilled tuna with cannellini beans or saltimbocca alla romana – all served by staff from the old school of Italian hospitality. There are some classic desserts too, while Sunday also brings traditional roasts from the carvery. Be warned that prices are painful, especially when you factor in the all-Italian list.

Not the packed out A-list haunt of yore. But that brings the benefit of making it easier to book a table now to feast on still the finest Italian fare in London despite the sad passing of Mara. The indestructible Lorenzo still presides with all his Latin charm, often in the company of Italian football managers and players living in the capital (and one notable Portuguese),.

Giorgio was a great waiter Baby crying two tables away, , this was a pre booked Saturday Evening Meal for two . I was not expecting babies to be crying and children to be running around the venue, even though the baby was cute, it made me and my partner feel we where sat down at a KFC surrounded by child minders on afternoon out, . Food my food was good starter fairly ok, main course was good, my partner had fried fish, and said it was disappointing and taste less, desert amazing although a raspberry was mouldy , our meal and drinks where £240. and i will remember the evening BABY CRYING TABLE 2. 3 hours later . no apologies for baby crying and decor needs updating, cracks in walls, seats where damaged my own chair was frayed at the edges, my partner snagged her new dress on the edge of her chair as she let to go to the ladies room but service was great, and there was a celeb in the house, but Baby crying come on, get a grip

This was okay, and if we had no expectations it might have been good. But really with all the celeb attention we expected the dining room, the food and the service to be top notch and it wasn't. There wasn't anything to complain about – other than a £5 cover charge added to the bill – whatever for we don't know as I didn't see a disco, but there wasn't anything to rave about either. Overall an average, night out. I fear San Lorenzo, like it's dining room, was was something special 20 years ago, but not today.
