Ruth's is a bistro-style neighbourhood restaurant in Putney, run by chef Ed Baillieu and GM Callum Ross, with a menu centred around British classics.
is your new favourite neighbourhood spot, even if you don't live in Putney. And, for those who don't, we'd say it's well worth the journey. Take a quick look at the website and you'll get the vibe; stylish, muted tones of olive green and warm beige create a backdrop for the eatery's logo of a painterly-drawn woman's face. Feminine, contemporary, creative - anyone will love Ruth's, but it's certainly the kind of place you'd book with your girlfriends for a long catch up, and snap a few pictures for social media as you do.
Inside, the space is intimate with bistro furniture, classic white tablecloths and plenty of candlelight. Outside, the restaurant is instantly noticable thanks to its pea-green frontage and cute cafe curtain details. Wood pannelling along the walls keeps the space lived in, and there's a few bar stools at the bar for drinks and snacks, too.
The menu is all about seasonal produce, celebrating the best ingredients sourced from farmers, fishers, and growers across the British Isles. You might start with a small plate or two, like the smoked mackerel pate or grilled lagoustines, before moving onto mains. Here, larger plates are simple but soulful, with examples like turkey and ham pie which can be shared between two, bavette with bone marrow gravy or megrim sole with lemon and caper butter. You'll want a few sides, too, so try the pink fir potatoes with smoked butter and butterman's lettuce with coleman's dressing.
If you've got a sweet tooth, you won't want to skip pudding. Fill your boots with sweet treats like lemon tart, chocolate mousse or apple and blackberry crumble with blackberry ripple ice cream. And, whether you fancy an aperetiv like a negroni or grape, Campari and lime enzoni, or delving into the post-dinner spirits, the drinks list won't let you down.
