Parts of this ancient building date back to 1452, & it now forms part of the town’s historic Civil War trail: beams & standing timbers are everywhere, the ceilings are skull-crackingly low, an open fire blazes in winter & the place simply fizzes with atmosphere. It’s all down to Michael Thurlby, owner of Ufford Ales, who has turned what was a run-down, town-centre boozer into a prized gem. Beer buffs know they have come to the right place – although the same could apply to the excellent wine list. On the food front, popular classics chime with the simple, rustic appeal of this affable pub, whether it’s ham, egg & sauté potatoes, beef lasagne or speciality stone-baked pizzas. A friendly team manages to balance the needs of drinkers in the bar with those wanting to eat, & an all-weather patio awaits for alfresco chilling.

By far the worst pub food and service we have ever had.
