Tucked away in the pretty Vale of Belvoir village of Colston Bassett, The Martin's Arms is a 17th-century Grade II-listed pub and restaurant with real destination credentials. Since MasterChef: The Professionals champion Laurence Henry took the helm alongside his wife Sera, this beloved Nottinghamshire inn has quietly become one of the East Midlands' most exciting dining addresses – listed in the Michelin Guide and a long-standing favourite among pub aficionados.
Inside, the mood is traditional but polished: antique mahogany furniture, a magnificent carved Jacobean fireplace in the bar, and a more formal dining room that strikes just the right balance between smart and relaxed. There's also a gloriously sunny garden terrace for warmer days, and a cosier Tap Room for those who prefer a pint and something more casual by the fire.
The à la carte menu at The Martin's Arms is where Henry's cooking really shines. Starters show real gastropub talent – think beetroot-cured salmon with oscietra caviar and blood orange, or Cornish mussels in a cider and smoked bacon sauce, alongside the standout Colston Bassett Stilton soufflé (the world-famous dairy is practically next door).
Meanwhile, mains range from spring lamb with confit belly, feta and wild garlic, to pan-seared cod with beurre blanc, Iberico pork with black pudding and burnt apple, and a satisfying fish and chips for those keeping it classic. The grill section delivers serious steak options, including an 8oz fillet, 10oz ribeye, or the showstopping Cote de boeuf for two at 700g. There’s also a Wagyu burger, complete with Lincolnshire poacher or Colston Basset cheese.
Sunday roasts are equally considered, with slow-roasted sirloin, braised lamb shoulder, and a spring risotto among choices. Plus, you’ll also find set lunch menus offering excellent value, while the drinks list – which includes a bespoke Martin's Arms ale – rounds things off nicely.
