Jamaica Road SE16 isn’t exactly the ‘land of the rising sun’, but Poppy Hana is a real-deal Japanese asset down Bermondsey and Rotherhithe way. It’s not much to look at from the outside, but there’s much to enjoy once you get through the door. Plush modern interiors include a licensed sushi bar, while speedy staff are on hand to guide you through the menu. Around 20 types of nigiri, plus hosomaki (narrow rolls), futomaki, temaki and sashimi loom large, but also look for tempura, katsu curries, udon noodles and donburi rice bowls. To start, order wakame salad, chicken yakitori or deep-fried chicken kara-age, and don’t forget about the bento boxes for an all-in package.
