SquareMeal Review of Pizza Pilgrims Waterloo

Bronze Award

Since its launch in 2012, Pizza Pilgrims has established itself as a must-visit spot for Pizza lovers in London. Thee brand's South London branch can be found on Lower Marsh – a pretty, pedestrianised street behind Waterloo station. The restaurant certainly has curb appeal, with a pretty façade featuring 3 separate shop fronts, each one painted a different colour of the Italian flag. If it’s warm enough, you can make the most of the outdoor seating with a table under the awnings, the perfect spot for people watching.

If you like a cold beer with your pizza, you will not be disappointed as your pint comes in an iced glass. There is also a choice of cocktails, including the all-Italian favourites of an Aperol Spritz or Negroni.

Pizza Pilgrims doesn’t offer starters specifically, but there are a range of sides available which we asked to have before our pizzas. We had the mac and cheese balls and crispy deep-fried artichoke which were both delicious, especially dipped in the pesto aioli. We also ordered the mozzarella garlic bread, which is made from the same fresh dough as their famous Neapolitan pizzas.

There are 11 pizzas available on the menu, including the Eight Cheese (yes, eight), Mama’s Boy Meatball and Burrata and Pesto. We opted for a simple Margherita and the Double Peperoni and Spicey Honey. The Margarita was perfectly cooked, with a crispy crust, but gooey cheesy centre. The chili-infused honey on the peperoni is an absolute game-changer, and the perfect combination of flavours.

A small selection of desserts are available, including the Nutella Pizza Ring and the heavenly Nutellamisu; a tiramisu loaded with Nutella.

The lovely team offered excellent service and were super friendly. They went out of their way to accommodate our fellow dinners, including babies and dogs – proving it’s the perfect place to bring the whole family.

If you are looking for a relaxed meal near Waterloo or a really good pizza in London, Pizza Pilgrims is an absolute must. They have locations all over London and one restaurant in Oxford. Their Pizzas are also available as a takeaway or if you fancy making your own, they offer at home kits too.

About

Having already opened a number of sites across London (including in Soho, Shoreditch and Covent Garden to name just a few), casual pizza parlour Pizza Pilgrims has now made its way over to Waterloo.

Found on Lower Marsh, the 120-cover pizzeria offers both indoor and outdoor dining, with guests able to book a table ahead of time or walk straight in when there is space available. Offering a distinct look from the other London locations, Pizza Pilgrims Waterloo boasts a unique restaurant front, sporting three sections each boldly painted in the green, white and red colours of the Italian flag, paying homage to the restaurant’s Italian roots.

On the Pizza Pilgrims Waterloo menu, you can expect to find the usual selection of freshly baked Neapolitan-style pizzas. Varieties of pizza to try include Mama’s Boy Meatballs (beef and sausage meatballs baked with tomato and basil and topped with fresh parsley) and Salsiccia e Friarielli; roasted Italian sausage and wild broccoletti on an olive oil base with smoked mozzarella, parmesan and fresh chilli.

When it comes to dessert, you can satisfy any sweet tooth cravings with Pizza Pilgrim’s signature Nutellamisu, a house take on the classic Italian dessert of tiramisu which is loaded with Nutella chocolate spread and served in the hollowed out Nutella jar. To help wash it all down, sip on wines and beers or give one of the fun house cocktails a try - Ferrero Rocher Espresso Martini anyone?

Pizza Pilgrims has also worked hard to make its menu more inclusive, now offering gluten-free base options as well as halal alternatives, available on classic Neapolitan pizzas at every Pizza Pilgrims location. Plant-based diners are not left behind either, thanks to the launch of a house-made vegan mozzarella, which can be used to create a vegan version of your favourite pizza.
