There's afternoon tea and then there's enjoying this quintessential British tradition overlooking the Thames, snuggled alongside landmarks like the London Eye and Big Ben, surrounded by rows of thoroughly-leafed books at London Marriott County Hall. If you don't know the history of County Hall, it's a fascinating tale: opened in 1922 this stunning building is a landmark example of Edwardian Baroque architecture and was once the head quarters of London's local government, now serving as a tourist hub for hospitality, hotels and activities. Much of the building is perfect preserved - including the beautiful library, which will wow you with a commanding stone fireplace, Beauty and the Beast-esque book-laden shelves and even statues of former political figures. Huge original windows fill the space with light (so don't worry, it's not stuffy!) and of course, allow for that incredible view which looks directly across to Big Ben himself. The experience starts in the traditional way with dainty finger sandwiches filled with high-quality ingredients. Think pickled cucumber with whipped cream cheese and dill, alongside Clarence Court ‘Burford Brown’ truffled egg mayonnaise topped with chives and a signature favourite. Be sure to try the The Library Tea cured salmon by H Forman & Sons with salty caper butter, too. Next up, it's time for some buttermilk scones fresh out the oven and still warm to the touch, smothered in Dorset clotted cream and ‘Tiptree’ The Library Strawberry jan. Fancy something a little out of the ordinary? Give the sweet basil scone a try, best paired with Tiptree lemon curd. For the sweetest of sweet treats, there's a selection of impressive pastries - the most eye-catching of which is the Elizabeth Tower, crafted in the shape of the bell tower you're gazing out to. It can't be missed - and, don't forget to take a photo! We also like the sound of the Black Forest gateaux and banana and salted caramel slice.Vegans and vegetarians are both catered for with a fully plant-based menu available and as well as tea, you can also add a glass of champagne to your experience - if you should so wish!
