Set just a few yards from Aldgate Station and a short walk from Liverpool Street, Penny Squares is an authentic Italian spot for laid-back evening dining, true-to-goodness flavours, and exceptional signature pizzas. You’ll find it within the four-star Canopy by Hilton Hotel, a place to relax and recharge in a welcoming atmosphere.
Whether dropping in to pick up a takeaway pizza, stopping for lunch, or taking a break to snack on sharing boards, Penny Square is all about authentic Italian food with a modern edge. The name is a nod to the rich textile history of East London, inspired by the detailed embroidery patterns created by the Huguenot weavers who settled in the area between the 16th and 19th centuries. These small intricate designs cost a penny each, and reflected craftsmanship and ingenuity. Penny Squares pays homage to this history, not just in the square-shaped pizzas, but by putting attention to detail first and foremost.
Pizza is the signature dish on the Penny Squares menu. Each one is made from 24-hour fermented sourdough, and formed with the best caputo 00 flour to create soft airy bases with maximum flavour. The menu is seasonal, so along with traditional Margheritas, guests can expect ever-changing bold and flavoursome toppings like pumpkin and gorgonzola, along with salsiccia and friarielli. There really is something for everyone, but if you can’t decide on just one, opt for the sharing pizza and choose up to three flavours to enjoy.
You’ll also find a selection of pasta dishes, including creste di gallo with tomato, seafood and parsley; pappardelle with confit duck ragu, and a smoked butter emulsion; and mezzi rigatoni with cream roasted pumpkin and gorgonzola cheese. It’s a convivial space, with a drinks list to match. So think warm and modern Mediterranean interiors, Negronis, Orange Spritzes, and Italian wines.
