Unusual cooking, big portions, very filling” says a local fan of this little family-run restaurant tucked away in the leafy suburbs of Northfields, Ealing. Although the kitchen pays lip service to the Indian subcontinent (especially Kerala), its main geographical focus is further south in Sri Lanka, with specialities from all parts of the island. By-pass the samosas, Bombay potato, chicken Madras, vegetable biryani and prawn masala in favour of more authentic specialities such as mutton rolls, squid curry, devilled beef with spiced mango or lumprais (a Dutch-influenced composite dish involving rice boiled in stock served on a banana leaf alongside an assortment of curries, fish cutlets and sambal). Above all, don’t miss the signature ‘hoppers’ (bowl-shaped rice-flour pancakes with myriad fillings) or their noodle cousin, the ‘string hopper’ – a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast staple.

The service was excellent and the atmosphere was brilliant. It's not easy to find Sri Lankan food; harder still to find GOOD Sri Lankan food, easily my favourite Sri Lankan restaurant in London
