About Padella

SquareMeal Review

Gold Award

Sometimes all you want in London is a concise, straightforward menu, superb food and good value. The team behind much-loved Highbury Italian Trullo have well and truly cracked it here. Split over two floors, this cramped, no-reservations pasta bar features a marble-topped counter overlooking the kitchen (watch the pasta being hand-rolled on site) and a black and gold, low-lit basement dining room and bar. We were treated to a classic 80s soundtrack and a full restaurant, creating an effortlessly congenial vibe. Antipasti include unembellished plates of beef fillet carpaccio and burrata, leaving a list of six pasta dishes to steal the show. We ordered a second plate of the unassuming pici cacio e pepe: fat, al dente spaghetti with butter, Parmesan and black pepper, astonishingly delicious and tangy, only £6. Pappardelle with Dexter beef shin ragu was similarly bursting with flavour, the beef cooked with due respect. Almond and rhubarb tart was a crunchy, sublime steal at £4. Some portions could be larger (although none of the dishes are more than £10) and there are just three cocktails and four wine choices – don’t miss the peachy, smooth Sussex Bacchus – being succinct is Padella’s core characteristic. In a city of endless choices, Padella is a supreme antidote.

The wait was worth it!
04 February 2018
I heard so many good things about Padella that I decided to give it a try, despite the queue. And it was worth it! The lamb ragu pappardelle absolutely stole the show - the pasta was al dente and the sauce was flavourful and aromatic. If you want to beat the line, go 15 minutes before it opens at 5pm!

PADELLA Staff and Manager do not welcome families- Be Warn
14 September 2017
NOT a FAMILY FREINDLY RESTAURANT Before we queued we told the tall bald waiter that we have a child and needed the tables in the basement. However after 45 mins of queuing with a now very hungry little toddler, we were almost to the front of queue, we were told we have to wait another 45 mins because they just filled up the tables in the basement. But there were still many available counter seats which other customers with no children can seat on. So why did the tall bald waiter give away the table downstairs well knowing that the next people in queue is a family who really need the table seats!?! When we complaint about this- we were asked to leave the queue by waiter. When we complained to the manager- she was siding the waiter and asked us to leave the restaurant Lovely pasta- BUT IF COMING WITH LITTLE CHILDREN - AVOID PADELLA

Perfect pasta

3 of us ate here on Saturday, we were the first in the queue at 11.30am and by the time the doors opened at midday there must have been 40 people waiting in line. We shared the following - the special starter was seared beef carpaccio with a glorious olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt, (melt in the mouth), a lovely creamy burrata with pepper and the same wonderful oil, bread warm from the oven. The pasta dishes were all delicious, one with a pesto sauce, basil and ricotta ravioli with lots of lemon zest that was so light and zingy, with parmesan and a fennel sausage ragu on parpadelle, followed by salted caramel ice cream and a cherry and almond tart. Carafes of pinot grigio (500ml) @ £14 each (all wine and beer on tap). The bill came in at £96 for 3 of us. The restaurant itself is laid out a bit like Barrafina with a large bar that you sit at and watch the chefs work, but without any of the banter and camaraderie that you get there, everyone just works on their station, without speaking a word. The waiting staff are great, running around and talking with everyone. There are some tables downstairs too and another “bar” to sit at. I’m not sure if I would bother to come again unless I was here at 11.30am, as the queue just goes on all day and they don’t even fill the restaurant (I guess to so as not to overload the chefs), so you can stand there for a quite a while looking at empty seats and not be allowed in. But all in all a very enjoyable experience that, required a long walk to work off the carbs.
