SquareMeal Review of One Club Row

Don’t let the name fool you. One Club Row might evoke visions of Savile Row tailoring, Montecristo cigars and Lagavulin swirling in crystal decanters - but it’s playing a very different tune. Swap the whisky for Champagne, Martinis, oysters by the dozen and a flash of star-spangled Stateside hospitality, and you’re much closer to the mark.

The entrance alone is pure Instagram bait: a cobalt-blue awning tucked down a graffiti-splashed Shoreditch alley. Climb the stairs and you're greeted by a dining room that’s charmingly worn-in and utterly chic - all slouchy tablecloths, polished bistro chairs, and artfully distressed walls. Original 19th-century details like the panelling, cornicing, and fireplace all hold court beneath slatted Venetian blinds, filtering the evening light across original timber floors.

That old-world allure extends to the menu, which is comfortingly familiar but never boring. Think steak tartare on beef-dripping toast, black pig ham with celeriac remoulade, lobster tagliatelle, and a perfectly wobbly creme brulee. Lobster and country ham croquettes arrive fat and golden, crammed with thick bechamel and cloaked in crisp breadcrumbs. Pickled jalapeno gougeres come buried under a flurry of grated cheese - their sharp kick a perfect foil for a pitch-perfect Martini.

The cheeseburger au poivre is hard to miss - a playful nod to One Club Row’s Martini-fuelled swagger, served with the peppery sauce on the side for dipping. It’s a fun idea that fits the vibe, but the sauce lacks punch and might work better reimagined as a classic burger dressing. No such caveats for the curried moules frites, though: they’re excellent, fragrant with curry leaf and paired with a stack of towering ‘chips’, which are really more like deep-fried potato terrines.

The food isn’t perfect, but any qualms are overridden by the palpable magic in the air. It’s in the rising hum of the dining room as you reach the top of the stairs, in the clink of glassware, in that reckless third Martini and extra plate of gougères you didn’t plan to order. One Club Row may be new, but it already feels broken-in, warm, and full of promise - the kind of place destined to host a thousand memorable lunches and dinners.

About

Tucked away above The Knave of Clubs, One Club Row is an intimate, stylish restaurant bringing the glamour, energy, and warm hospitality of New York to East London. With a dedicated private entrance, this refined yet lively dining space is designed for long lunches, late dinners, and unforgettable evenings. Whether you’re settling in at the bar with a martini or indulging in a feast with friends, One Club Row offers an atmosphere that feels both exciting and effortlessly elegant.

At the helm is celebrated chef Patrick Powell, alongside Head Chef Attila Gellen, crafting a menu inspired by the timeless appeal of Parisian bistros and New York’s legendary taverns. Dishes highlight the best of seasonal British produce, starting with oysters and classic martinis, followed by steak tartare, roasted scallops in garlic butter, and fresh tuna crudo. Mains range from a signature burger au poivre to whole lobster tagliatelle and a bone-in ribeye with chipotle hollandaise - bold flavours designed for sharing and savouring.

The bar champions classic cocktails and an old-world wine list, with an ever-changing by-the-glass selection and indulgent bottles at friendly mark-ups. A house pianist sets the mood every weekend, and monthly late-night shows bring live jazz, cocktails, and a vibrant bar menu.

Set within a Grade II-listed building, One Club Row’s dining room blends rich history with contemporary style, featuring original 19th-century panelling, a striking fireplace, and bold artwork from award-winning London artist Joy Yamusangie. The space seats just 45 guests, with an additional 10 seats at the bar - the coveted spots for those who love to dine in the heart of the action.

For private gatherings, the beautifully restored upper floor offers exclusive dining and event spaces, from The Dressing Room’s intimate setting for 12 to The Living Room’s capacity for 24, with the full apartment available for larger celebrations.

Led by an expert team with backgrounds in some of London and New York’s finest restaurants, One Club Row is more than just a place to eat—it’s an experience, a destination, and an exciting addition to London’s dining scene.
