Named after the ancient Nor’ Loch that once occupied Princes Street Gardens, this stylish spot on the seventh floor of the recently opened Market Street Hotel is sold as a rooftop Champagne Lounge, but offers plenty more besides. From breakfast to afternoon tea and small plates come evening, it’s a cosy haven for trendy types in search of a break from the hustle and bustle of the city that can be seen (and photographed) so clearly from its enormous windows.
On stepping out of the lift, it’s clear to see how much thought has gone into the design of this modern hotel. The sleek granite bar contrasts perfectly with the warm wooden floors and assorted chairs, just as the wall containing compact fires at different heights contrasts with the cold grey stone of the historic old town beyond the windows. Bold, yet relaxed, it’s instantly inviting, much like the friendly staff we encountered.
The breakfast offering sounds promising, but we found the pantry items slightly lacking in variety. There were a couple of cereals, yogurts in adorable mini mason jars, some pastries – including vegan croissants – and meats and cheeses, but not in the quantities you might expect at a 98-room hotel. The set-up was a little chaotic too, with very little space to put anything down while you negotiate the milk stored in a lowdown fridge, but when we did eventually make it back to our table, we enjoyed the coffee, roasted just moments away by Gordon St Coffee on Market Street, and the homemade banana loaf.
Champagne isn’t served before 11am, but having perused the menu, it’s clear that these guys know their stuff. From independent growers to well-respected Champagne houses including Moet and Louis Roederer, Nor’ Loft stocks over 20 labels, half of which are available by the glass. There’s plenty more to drink behind the well-stocked bar too, so whether you’re out for cocktails, a glass of wine and a plate of smoked chicken rillettes, or a sparkling afternoon tea, you won’t go thirsty.
