Chesterfield isn’t the prettiest town in Derbyshire, but there’s a very good reason to visit: Non Solo Vino (‘not only wine’) is a sophisticated Italian restaurant and oenophile emporium with an Enomatic preservation system allowing numerous wines to be dispensed by the glass. Try as many as you like in any amount, with some excellent food on the side. Graze on bocconcini (small bites) such as gnocchi with figs and prosciutto, or plump for a generous antipasti board – this is a great place to meet friends and tarry. Main courses make the most of locally sourced meat and game, so expect the likes of agnello d’alpeggio (lamb with crushed potatoes, tomato and anchovy dressing) or rotolino d’anata (confit duck roulade with caramelised orange purée and candied figs). Regular jazz nights and wine tastings keep it lively.
