“A real treat in an unusual location”, Paul Noble’s eponymous restaurant continues to court the Sussex crowd by offering accessible Anglo-European food in unfussy, elegant surrounds close to the site of the Battle of Hastings. The kitchen is in fine fettle, making a good fist of its wide-ranging, eager-to-please repertoire. You can have just one course or the full works from a menu that runs from blue cheese Waldorf salad or ‘local fish of the day’ with saffron cream to more contemporary ideas such as a risotto of blue swimmer crab with lobster oil and parmesan or loin and belly of local lamb with braised meatballs, beans and rosemary gravy. Steaks from local Sussex herds are a speciality, while desserts are comfort classics such as sticky ginger pudding or Eton mess. A separate snack menu pulls in the lunchtime trade.
