We’re going meat mad for National Butchers’ Week, kicking off celebrations with some fun (meat-orientated) facts:
1) The word ‘carnival’ originally meant ‘a farewell to meat’, referring to the Christian tradition of giving up meat for Lent (which we certainly have not done)
2) In the 4th century, the Catholic Church banned the eating of sausages as a sin because they were associated with pagan festivals (we’d have been promptly burnt at the steak… sorry, stake)
3) The average (apparently less pious) Briton consumes 44.9kg of meat in their lifetime – but if you think that’s a lot, consider our friends over the pond, who nearly double that at a whopping 88.3kg…
