A London restaurant will sell ‘period pancakes’ this Pancake Day

East London restaurant The Book Club will sell ‘period pancakes’ this Pancake Day, to raise awareness of period poverty.

The Book Club, which can be found in Shoreditch, will serve up red velvet ‘period pancakes’ to support period poverty charity Bloody Big Brunch. The pancakes will be available from 3-10 March, with 15% of the profit from the sale of each dish going to the charity.

Bloody Big Brunch aims to raise funds to help tackle period poverty, as well as working to destigmatise conversations around periods. Shockingly, the charity’s research has shown that almost three in 10 women throughout the UK have been unable to afford menstrual products at some point, with up to 26% of those affected missing school or work because of their embarrassment.

The period pancakes are priced at £8 per plate, or £9.50 if you’d rather enjoy one topped with a tampon macaron from Ohlala bakery. On Sunday 3 March, the day of the pancake’s launch, The Book Club will host a fundraising party featuring Made in Chelsea’s Jess Woodley and television presenter Grace Woodward, alongside DJs and drag queens.

If you’re not based in East London but still want to get involved, Bloody Big Brunch is encouraging people to host their own brunch at home, serving Bloody Marys to guests. The only catch is that guests have to pay for their drinks with period products, which can then be distributed to charities around the UK, such as Bloody Good Period or The Red Box Project.

In the last year, the Bloody Big Brunch has hosted events that have helped over 5,000 women gain access to period products they could not have afforded otherwise. By emploring members of the public to hold their own brunches on 3 March, the aim is to raise this number to 10,000 - and also put pressure on the UK government for lasting legislative change.

While ‘period pancakes’ are certainly a shock tactic, the issue of period poverty is an important one, and we’re sure a stunt like this will get people talking and hopefully lead to positive change – cheers to that.
