SquareMeal Review of Mountain Café

Perched above a shop selling outdoor gear on Aviemore’s main street, the Mountain Café was opened by New Zealander Kirsten Gilmour in 2004. Its simple decor & good cooking soon became a big hit with the tourists & walkers who head for this small Highland town to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Wake-up sustenance comes in the shape of breakfasts ranging from hot-smoked salmon & scrambled eggs on a toasted muffin to full fry-ups (including a veggie version). Lunch brings terrific smoked seafood chowder, homemade burgers, generous salads, fishcakes or apricot, pecan & chicken mayo sandwiches (a nod to Gilmour’s Pacific Rim roots). The café also stocks really inventive cakes – perfect for some between-meals self-indulgence. Definitely worth the trip upstairs.

Good quality food and service in a beautiful old pub. Some very nice wines on their list also.

Aspiring, Pleasant and Addictive! I sit alone writing this review after another amazing visit to Mountain Cafe! I'm still taken aback by the amazing views from the rustic style cafe interior. The beautiful peaks of the Cairngorm Mountain are one of my favorite views within the world and Scotland. At this moment a glowing pink sky and slightly white topped mountain peaks are stunning! To break down the positives i have found with the cafe food, in my opinion are: * Quality fresh produce that has been cooked to a great standard on each visit (soups, burgers, salads etc!) * High quality coffee and drink products. (My favorite being the banana milkshake! At my age they still bring back childhood memories.) * Amazing selection of cakes! Never have i seen in this area or Scotland so much quality and variety of cakes and tray bakes! The fact of the matter that prices here seem to be inflated is a mere fraction of the priceless cost that brings the views and comforting atmosphere within. The truth of the matter is that the cost here is a par within the local area, but the key difference is the quality reflects the price! Now having eaten here on rather a few occasions as a couple, with close family and my nieces and nephews. I can honestly give a lot of credit to the front of house staff and kitchen team for never failing to disappoint! A lot of hard work seems to go into creating a magical and social experience that this cafe brings! I would say Mountain Cafe is a must for any visitor to Aviemore!

Simply the best place to eat if your in Aviemore or the surrounding area for the day. Wonderful breakfasts, superb lunches & great service. We regularly visit the area for outdoor activities & they are always arranged round breakfast of lunch at the Mountain Cafe. The breakfast is wonderful. Although we are not vegetarian we love the veggie breakfast. The quiches a ram packed with flavour & the daily special never fail to disappoint! And if you can fit it in the cakes are delicious! Tip: Get in sharp for lunch if you don;t want to be caught in the rush as its a popular place!
