SquareMeal Review of Light House

Silver Award

Those who thought Light House would be a bit of a fly-by-night operation have been proved resoundingly wrong. This bright, airy dining room is slightly out of the way from the centre of Wimbledon Village, but locals don’t seem to begrudge the five-minute walk. The wood-&-glass interior makes for a clattering background to dining here, & at busy times the noise can be oppressive. Nevertheless, the restaurant’s good points – well-executed European cooking with global influences, a decent wine list, & a welcoming, neighbourly ambience – more than compensate. Start with Picos blue cheese with pickled walnuts, then move on to cockle-warming lamb shank with mint jelly, or poached haddock with mussels & tarragon. Great-value set lunches keep the atmosphere upbeat. Booking is essential, especially during Wimbledon fortnight.

High quality cooking, friendly effective service
14 October 2018
We've been to Light House a few times and always had excellent food. The cooking is of a very high standard and the dishes are imaginative. One thing that appeals to me is that the dishes come complete with vegetables that the chef has chosen to suit - none of your extra £5 to get a bit of green or a pile of chips! Although not cheap, the Light House is good value; our meal came to about £45 a head including drinks and service. The restaurant, which was packed on a Saturday night, is an attractive place, although on an unseasonably warm night, the ambient temperature rose uncomfortably until they got the air conditioning under way.

The light house is off the beaten Wimbledon Village track, but the ringing of conversation and cutlery from the packed tables that greets you as you enter, is testament to it's popularity. The decor is modern and relaxed, and the menu is varied with enough choice to keep your waiter waiting while you eeny, meeny, miny, moe your way through the options. The service we received was friendly and expedient, and the food was fresh and full of flavour; with scallops to start that were perfectly cooked and served with well selected accompaniments, the lamb, tender and succulent. The set menu offers excellent value for money and the wine list caters for a spectrum of palates. Worth the walk for the food alone; those in 6in heels should consider a cab.
