La Maritxu comes from a Basque family, who always dreamt of bringing traditions of Basque culture to new places across the globe. A relatively new addition to the London foodie scene, La Maritxu opened its doors on Connaught Street back in 2021, and has been thriving ever since, recently opening a second site in Soho. The team of passionate chefs and pastry chefs use only the best quality ingredients with a large helping of love, to create authentic Basque cheesecakes and special additions to the menu.
The famous Basque burnt cheesecake is made with a burnt, caramelised and crustless base, baked at a high temperature to ensure the iconic burnt exterior and rich and creamy filling. The recipe has been in the family for generations and, at this point, has pretty much been perfected. When it comes to the menu, there’s only one thing available: the cheesecake. Hundreds are made by the team each day, and you can order yours by the slice, or whole, with a couple of different sizes available to order, including a mini cheesecake for one, or eight- or ten- inch cheesecakes for those looking to share. Although keep an eye out, the team are planning to add new Basque desserts to the menu in the future.
This simple shop boasts a minimalistic design, with parquet-wood flooring and a large open kitchen with equally large fridges where the cheesecakes are held. There’s only a couple of seats inside, and another couple on the terrace if you’re looking for some al fresco snacking, but you can easily pop in and grab your slices to go. A selection of hot and iced drinks are also available, making for the perfect pairing alongside your cheesecake.
