Afternoon tea at ROBA Café & Bar, as part of Norfolk Towers Paddington Hotel, has something for everyone - both traditionalists and those who are up for a playful twist. Located within easy reach of Paddington and Marble Arch stations, the restaurant not only boasts a great spot in one of London's most historic areas, it also enjoys a personal connection to one of English literature's favourite furry figures: Paddingon Bear.
It's no surprise that as afternoon tea enthusiastics, the team have created a very cute version of this traditional refreshment themed around Paddington himself, complete with duffle coat and red hat decorations. The menu doesn't eschew classic recipes entirely, still happily leaning into familiar flavours and comforting combinations, beginning with a selection of finger sandwiches that include cucumber with crème fraîche, ham and cheese, and smoked salmon with cream cheese. But, it's the zingy marmalade sandwiches that'll have Paddington fans smiling from ear to ear.
Warm scones follow - both plain and sultana - served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, as you'd expect. The pastry selection continues in a similarly crowd-pleasing vein, with sweet treats such as sticky chocolate brownie, mini macarons, a fresh strawberry cream slice and double chocolate fudge cake.
As always, a good cup of tea is central to the experience, with a choice that covers traditional English breakfast and Earl Grey alongside green, fruity and herbal options. For those marking an occasion, there’s also the option to upgrade with Prosecco, adding a celebratory pop of the cork to your afternoon. However, if you'd prefer to keep things simple, ROBA Café & Bar also offers their signature afternoon tea which is a little more traditional.
In terms of the setting, this luxurious hotel lounge has been crafted by Birmingham-based interior designed Tibbat’s Abel, with a cheme that combines contemporary styling with custom copper detailing, creating a space that feels polished but not overly formal. It’s the kind of room that works just as well for a casual afternoon as it does for a more planned gathering. Whatever you had in mind.
