SquareMeal Review of El Pastor London Bridge

Bronze Award

This cheap and cheerful taquería has a strong pedigree: it’s the latest venture from the brains behind Barrafina and Quo Vadis, the Hart brothers. Sam Hart lived in Mexico for five years and his passion shows in this buzzing Borough Market railway arch, from tacos made from scratch on the premises, to the specificity of the cuisine: the restaurant is named after the kebab-style grill employed for its Al Pastór pork tacos, borne out of Lebanese immigration to Mexico. Using marinated pork shoulder paired with caramelised pineapple and guacamole, these tacos are fine, but we think star billing should’ve gone to the short rib. Served DIY-style with enough tacos and fillings for two, the rib meat flops juicily off the bone, rubbed and sprinkled with a highly addictive, sweet-and-salty seasoning combining coriander and celery seeds, muscovado sugar and chipotle. With starters including ceviches and tuna tartare, a list of quesadillas and a must-order, cheese-and-chorizo-slathered corn on the cob on the side, Mexican fans will be fully satisfied. Worthwhile desserts include a coconut praline pie coated in chilli chocolate, while the drinks list is a Tequila-jammed as you might hope. Don’t expect a glistening Barrafina-does-Mexican, but do expect a lively, polished and fun meal supported by well-drilled staff and fair prices.

About

El Pastor London Bridge is located on Stoney Street, a short walk from Borough Market. Part of the El Pastor group, this taqueria is inspired by the flavours of Mexico City, with a focus on tacos and Mexican street food. The restaurant is housed in a railway arch, giving it a distinctive urban feel.

The menu revolves around tacos, with tortillas made in-house daily using Mexican heirloom corn. Fillings range from slow-cooked meats to fresh seafood and vegetarian options, all prepared with vibrant, authentic flavours. Alongside tacos, the menu features tostadas, quesadillas, and other small plates, offering a variety of textures and tastes. El Pastor also serves big sharing plates for multiple people, with dishes including chipotle short rib with pickled onion and salsa la maya, and beer brined half-chicken with salsa roja, papas al arbol, sour cream, pineapple-habanero slaw and mayo.

Drinks include a selection of tequila, mezcal, and Mexican beers, as well as cocktails like margaritas to complement the food.

The space is long and narrow, with exposed brick walls and hanging lights creating a lively, casual setting. Communal tables and bar seating make it a good choice for groups or informal dining. The open kitchen adds to the energy of the space, allowing diners to see the chefs at work.

Takeaway is available, and the restaurant also offers a selection of Mexican pantry items for purchase, including their freshly made tortillas. Bookings are accepted, though walk-ins are welcome as well.

The vegetarian options are extremely limited but the mushroom tacos are insane and my favourite part is the lengthy margarita tequila and mezcal menu!!

Food is excellent, great buzz, inexpensive and worth putting your name down and coming back and there are not many places I would do this for.
