Chez Mal mixes French brasserie cool with beefy New York glamour, combining urban style with a touch of Moulin Rouge and a sprinkling of Las Vegas glitter – think exposed brick walls, shiny surfaces, flashy fabrics, neon lights and a pumping soundtrack, plus daily specials advertised on a model of the classic Nevada Stardust Casino sign. Prime-grade USDA strip steaks are naturally the main event, cooked as you want them and served with slow-roasted onion and soubise purée, fries and special steak sauce. Otherwise, the menu trawls its way from crab tacos, beef carpaccio and Goan-style mussels to grilled lobster, American BBQ ribs and roast cod with shellfish vinaigrette. After that, go for calorie overload with lemon meringue cheesecake or sticky toffee pudding. To drink, expect quirky ‘Malchemy’ cocktails, ice-cold beers and a 100-bin wine list with everything available by the glass or carafe.

Booking cancelled an hour before arrival.

Came to London for a night at the Barbican, booked our meal for a treat after the show. As my mobile was turned off as requested by the theatre we did not receive the booking cancellation sent by Malmaison. Arrived there on the dot and was informed they had No Booking, I showed them my printed booking confirmation. Astonishment from the Receptionist who rang the kitchen and we were informed that if we got a move on they would cook us something quick ! A delightful waitress took our order for food and drinks - the food was simply awful, the steak was tough, lukewarm and stringy, tomato was almost petrified, tough and couldn't cut it and what I presume were fries again were only lukewarm and tasteless. If not for our lovely waitress we would have walked out, this was supposed to be a treat at a very happening establishment - so not impressed. Food terrible and overpriced , waitress service perfect, communication rubbish, we were glad to get back to The Bloomsbury Hotel and continued our evening. Rating - a big fat zero.
