A bright spark in Winchmore Hill, Buckle & Vaughan is an upbeat kind of place, with orange banquettes, earthy colour schemes and a big alfresco area opening onto The Green. Part bar, part restaurant, it majors on charcoal-grills, seafood and artisan breads from the wood oven, delivering a modern European menu with influences from far and wide. Starters of deep-fried Brie with pear chutney, sizzling prawns pil-pil or seared scallops with minted pea purée and balsamic reduction might give way to skewers of organic lamb on pilaf rice or pan-seared cod fillet topped with grilled chorizo, while support comes from burgers, dry-aged steaks and hefty mixed grills. If you still have room, round off with something familiar such as tarte Tatin or sticky toffee pudding. Weekday lunches are terrific value (£9.90 for two courses) and the place is “great for Sunday lunch” too. In short, a “fabulous dining experience”.
