About

Browns Cambridge occupies one of the city's more unexpected addresses: a converted wing of the old Addenbrooke's Hospital on Trumpington Street, its grand entrance framed by a sweep of Virginia creeper that turns copper in autumn. Step past it and the building's clinical past is nowhere to be seen. Inside, all is light and lofty, all soaring windows and easy brasserie polish, opening onto a terrace that fills fast whenever the Cambridge sun makes an appearance.

The setting alone would justify a visit, sitting as it does across from the Fitzwilliam Museum and a short stroll from the Cam, but the kitchen holds its own. This is British brasserie cooking done with a confident, contemporary hand: expect the reliable comforts of a proper Sunday roast alongside seafood that leans into the seasons, plus the kind of all-day menu that stretches happily from brunch to a late dinner without ever feeling like it's trying to be all things to all diners. Afternoon tea here has become something of a local institution, and gluten-free diners are well catered for rather than an afterthought.

It's the bar, though, that has built the cult following. Browns' Bloody Marys are a popular choice among regulars, and the drinks list runs deep enough to make a pre-theatre pit stop stretch into a full evening.

What Browns does particularly well is bridge two very different Cambridge crowds: the tourists working their way from the Fitzwilliam to the river, and the locals who've been coming for their weekend roast for years. Neither feels like an afterthought. It's dependable rather than daring, but dependable, done this well, is exactly the point.
