About

The Brown Cow is a beautiful British pub with rooms in the village of Chatburn, offering a relaxed environment to enjoy hearty traditional cooking. Set in the Ribble Valley, just a few minutes from Clitheroe on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, it’s a popular spot for hikers, locals, and visitors alike coming to dine on a menu that stretches from proper British classics to modern bistro dishes and Sunday roasts.

Inside, it’s the picture of an ideal country pub, richly layered with dark woods and brighter pops.  Deep midnight-blue walls serve as a backdrop for an eclectic gallery of antique artwork, vintage mirrors, and prints. Dark timber panelling, aged wooden flooring, and softly worn furniture reinforce The Brown Cow’s historic feel, while candle-style wall sconces and long tapered table candles cast a warm, comforting glow. Naturally, there’s an open fireplace too, roaring away throughout the winter.

The Brown Cow menu puts the emphasis on seasonal produce and comforting dishes. Though they evolve throughout the year, at the time of writing, you’ll find bar snacks and nibbles like scampi with dill pickle mayonnaise, pan-fried chorizo with fennel seed and blossom honey, and pork belly bites with red chilli and apple sauce. Starters range from wild mushrooms on toasted sourdough and Devon crab crostini with chilli and cucumber, to ham hock and pea terrine and kiln-smoked salmon with horseradish cream.

Mains offer up a wide range of choices, including evergreen favourites like beer-battered fish and chips and 28-day aged sirloin, alongside a host of seasonal dishes such as British rack of lamb with warm summer grain salad, whole Cornish sole with brown shrimp and samphire, or South West monkfish with butter makhani sauce. To finish, desserts stretch from a ‘proper sticky toffee pudding’ with chocolate and Guinness ice cream to apple crumble tarts and peach melba sundaes.
