SquareMeal Review of Brasserie Constance

Gold Award

Riverside dining doesn’t get much better than at this slick new brasserie on the first floor of Fulham Pier, a stylish, glass-fronted dining room overlooking the Thames with a terrace that’s made for soaking up the views with a stiff drink. Enormous glass windows allow the sun to cast its rays over every designer surface: circular, marble-topped tables with shimmery gold rims, an emerald tiled bar and glass chandeliers all catch the light beautifully, while warm, natural accents, from rattan chairs to leafy plants, add a softness to the space. Everywhere you look, inside and out, beauty reigns.

Michelin-starred chef Adam Byatt has applied his midas touch to the bones of the menu, while head chef Charlie Crote (ex-Midland Grand Dining Room) executes each idea flawlessly. Here, he elevates seasonal British classics to create dishes that feel both refined and nostalgic. Things like a giant Coronation crab vol-au-vent fill us with joy, balancing crisp puff pastry and soft crab meat with a minty remoulade and subtly spiced sauce. More good things come in pastry, including an elegant spring vegetable tart filled with mousse-like hazelnut cream, and offset by a fragrant basil puree. Elsewhere, blushing slices of meltingly soft sirloin come with an intense, wine-rich Hunter’s sauce. Even a side of carrots are spotlight-worthy, extraordinarily sweet and doused in crunchy toasted sunflower seeds.

This is cooking that’s already easy to like, but each tried-and-tested classic is injected with ingenuity and fun. We end on a fudgy walnut and date tart islanded in a pool of double cream – a riff on a sticky toffee pud and a treacle tart.

This is special occasion dining for sure, but never overly formal. Smartly dressed staff are happy to stop for a friendly chat, and the menu itself is designed with wit. ‘Livener’ cocktails and comically named snacks like ‘fried skate knobs’ set the tone from the off. It’s impossible not to have a good time here.

About

Brasserie Constance is the latest venture by renowned chef Adam Byatt, celebrated for his Michelin-starred Clapham restaurant, Trinity. Located within the new Fulham Pier development, this modern British brasserie is a noteworthy addition to Fulham's dining scene.

The restaurant is named after Constance Spry, a distinguished, British cookery writer, florist, and ceramicist, whose legacy inspires both the ambiance and culinary offerings. Patrons can anticipate an à la carte menu alongside set lunch options, featuring approachable, impeccably executed seasonal dishes that reflect Byatt's commitment to quality and innovation.

Situated on the second level of Fulham Pier, Brasserie Constance boasts interiors crafted by designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán. Known for his eclectic, layered interiors that blend classic elegance with contemporary flair, Lázaro Rosa-Violán's schemes often feature rich textures, warm lighting, and a mix of vintage and modern elements. For Brasserie Constance, the design aims to maximize uninterrupted views of the River Thames, creating an inviting atmosphere for both lunch and dinner guests.

Complementing the dining experience is Flo, a riverside cocktail bar offering a dedicated small-plates menu. Both venues will feature a 200-bin wine list curated by the sommelier team from Trinity, ensuring a diverse selection to suit various palates. Chef Byatt, who has previously resided in Fulham, has expressed enthusiasm about returning to the area, stating that Fulham Pier offers an ideal setting to showcase the best of British dining amidst stunning Thames views.

Brasserie Constance joins other establishments at Fulham Pier, including Goila Butter Chicken, Base Face Pizza, and Tinie Tempah’s Raps, contributing to a vibrant culinary destination. The development also features a boutique hotel and health spa, enhancing its appeal as a comprehensive leisure spot. For those seeking a refined yet approachable dining experience in Fulham, Brasserie Constance is a prime choice for both lunch and dinner reservations.
