The best Greenwich restaurants

Stretching across three storeys and featuring an outdoor terrace which overlooks Greenwich Park, this tavern is a good choice for a family day out or a gastropub dinner. There’s brunch and Sunday lunch at the weekends, while the main menu consists of a series of crowd-pleasers – think Cumberland sausages and mash, or mussels in garlic and white wine sauce served with fries. If you’re looking for a casual eat before watching an O2 show, Thunderbird Fried Chicken is a good shout. The brand originally started life as a street food concept, but now has this bricks and mortar restaurant which turns out wings, buckets and buns alongside milkshakes and beers. Some menu highlights include the Chipuffalo (fried chicken, buffalo sauce, chipotle sauce, pickles, blue cheese) and the meltdown fries, which are topped with jalapenos and miso cheese. 

This charming Mediterranean features vibrant artwork lining the walls and a patio garden where guests can relax in the warmer months. The menu features classic Mediterranean fare such as traditional paella and grilled Iberian pork fillets, while if you have got the little ones in tow, they can enjoy spaghetti in tomato sauce and cinnamon dusted churros for dessert. The considered wine list traverses Europe, while there are a handful of fun cocktails available too.

This cosy restaurant (which has Covent Garden and Brixton siblings) does exactly what it says on the tin, serving up a selection of grower Champagnes and exclusively French cheeses. Stop by here for a Champagne afternoon tea which features a tower of traditional macarons and a selection of cheeses, or visit later in the day when you can enjoy cheese and charcuterie boards and salads, as well as desserts such as cheesecake made in house.

Part of the Sticks n Sushi mini-chain, this Japanese restaurant is a celebration of all things fish, which is just as well considering its proximity to the Cutty Sark. When visiting, you can dive into California or black cod daikon sushi rolls, while those who aren’t in a fishy mood can opt for beef tataki or fried cauliflower topped with black truffle. There’s a kids menu too, while the sharing platters are great for groups.

Taking its name from one of London’s most famous maritime vessels, this cosy pub is now overseen by the Young's group and serves up beers, ales and wines from a well chosen list. The menu majors in above average pub grub, which means you can expect to enjoy the likes of a Devon crab and cod cake or an 8oz ribeye steak that’s been aged for 28 days. There are hearty roasts on Sundays too.

A brewery may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a chic place to have dinner, but this bar and restaurant, which is set inside a former Victorian brewhouse, is rather chic. There are 60 beers to choose from, while the menu consists of British pub classics given contemporary twists – think bangers and mash with onion rings and IPA gravy, followed by sticky toffee pudding with pistachio ice cream.

While Gaucho’s blingy interiors (including cowhide print chairs) may seem a bit 2009, its menu is bang up to date, featuring quality Argentinian steaks. Before heading off to see your favourite popstar, you can tuck into various cuts of free-range steak, as well as corn-fed chicken breast, Atlantic cod or pea and mint tortellini. Carry on the indulgence at dessert with a salted dulche de leche cheesecake, while sipping on wine from the exhaustive list.
