The best restaurants in East Sussex

Hungry for a cracking coastal lunch? Or, searching for a special occasion restaurant with serious fine dining pedigree? The best restaurants in East Sussex offer a fantastic mix of local neighbourhood gems, restaurants with a sea view and award-winning gastronomic destinations. Find them all in SquareMeal's curated list.

Updated on 24 August 2026

Any list of the best restaurants in East Sussex published even five years ago would look almost unrecognisable next to this one. The county now holds restaurants with Michelin stars and serious critical acclaim, as well as several entries in SquareMeal's UK Top 100 restaurants list. A lot of that ambition has arrived in the last decade, concentrated first around restaurants in Hove and Brighton and now spreading further into the Weald and the Downs.

Deciding where to eat in East Sussex typically falls into two dining offerings: one built on the coast, and one built on the land behind it. Fresh catch still turns up on menus from Camber to Eastbourne, and a seafront table with a view of the Channel is rarely hard to find. But the real change is the confidence in what the county grows and makes itself - kitchen gardens, a biodynamic vineyard and hyper-local sourcing now shape menus just as much as the sea does, and some of the most distinctive restaurants here are found well away from the seafront, in quaint villages and bustling market towns.

We've chosen the restaurants in this list based on real grounding: from quality of food to service and atmosphere, plus kitchens with a clear ethos behind them, be it sustainable practices or serving delicious, unpretentious cooking. A Michelin star carries real weight, but so does a village free house or a family-run bistro that's delivered unrockable food and service to locals for twenty years.

Of course, a coastal lunch with a view and a tasting menu at a fine dining restaurant are two completely different evenings out, so we've picked out specific recommendations based on what each one does best. From special-occasion fine dining and countryside pubs to Sunday roasts and rooftop views worth booking ahead.

Frequently asked questions about dining in East Sussex

Should I book restaurants in East Sussex in advance?

Yes, particularly at weekends and for anywhere with a loyal following, such as fine-dining or destination restaurants. Several venues in this guide note that weekend booking is advisable even where walk-ins are accepted, and smaller independents with limited covers can sell out well ahead of time.

Is East Sussex easy to travel to for a restaurant trip?

Yes. Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings and Rye all sit on mainline rail routes from London, making a day trip straightforward without a car. Plenty of rural spots, like vineyards and pubs, offer parking on site, but it's worth checking transport links for anywhere outside the main towns before booking.

Are dogs allowed in restaurants and pubs in East Sussex?

Dog-friendly policies vary by venue. Several restaurants in this guide explicitly welcome dogs, while others restrict them to bars or outdoor areas only. It's worth checking directly if you're planning to bring one along.

Does East Sussex cater well for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets?

Generally, yes. Most restaurants in East Sussex list vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free options, from dedicated vegan set-lunch dishes to produce-led seasonal menus. Provision and flexibility still vary by kitchen, so it's sensible to flag specific requirements when booking rather than assuming on arrival.

Where can I find outdoor dining or a view in East Sussex?

The coast delivers the most dramatic options for outdoor dining in East Sussex, with rooftop restaurants and al fresco terraces look out over the sea or town. Further inland, many country pubs and vineyard venues overlook the river valley towards the coast, or offer tables surrounded by beautiful rural scenery.
