SquareMeal Review of 1901 Restaurant

Tucked away beyond a staircase in the Andaz Hotel, 1901 is a hidden gem that rewards explorers with a grand former ballroom and a run of breakfast options. Open from 6.30am, hotel guests and visitors alike can tuck into a menu which includes a full English breakfast buffet, complete with fresh juices and shakes. Elsewhere, you can indulge in pancakes and waffles, or your choice of freshly cooked-to-order eggs. The stunning setting, including a stained-glass dome in the roof, is sure to be a conversation starter for even the grumpiest of early risers.

Dinner with my fiance here before saying goodbye for the week as the venue is conveniently round the corner from Liverpool st station. The setting of the dining room is lovely, and service was very attentive. Food was good, though the risotto seemed to be only warm (rather than hot) which implied it was perhaps out of a large batch – it was tasty though. Overall did the job as expected and a nice dinner in a pleasant setting.

London Restaurant Week
10 October 2013
I was looking for a good restaurant in the vicinity of Liverpool Street that would not break the bank. I regularly meet up with some old friends who have to come up to London and we go for our catch-up over dinner and drinks in the vicinity. As this was a sort of a last minute arrangement I was concerned not to be able to find somewhere nice for us to go. However, we were pleasantly surprised by this wonderful restaurant where we booked a quiet table and took advantage of the offer of £24 for a three course meal which was advertised as part of London Restaurant week. The ambience was lovely, the service was very professional and welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The portions are small but well prepared, well presented and filling enough for us. The wine is pretty expensive but even the modestly priced option of white wine which we had and which was £21 for a bottle was lovely, crisp and went well with our meal. The only reason why we would not go for the full price option is because it would just be too expensive for us but we would most certainly go again in combination with an offer.

Very nice venue and worked well for a business lunch as relatively quiet and the service was attentive but not over the top. Food was very good.

Probably one of the best all-round higher-end food options around Liverpool Street Station. Delivers reliable food (never had a let-down there but doesn't over-exite either) but service can at times be a bit of hit and miss. Has some serious competition inhouse within the Andaz hotel as you have a brasserie, sea food and japanese restaurant next door

My friend and I had one of the best afternoon tea at the 1901 restaurant , from the moment we walk throught the Hotel doors , the staff couldn't be more helpful and professional. The restaurant has a beautiful and relaxing setting. The savoury venison pies and sandwiches were fresh and very tasty, scones and pastries were delicious, clotted cream and preserves plentiful. Very good selection of teas. The staff were very friendly , professional and attentive , ensured we were having an enjoyable afternoon. I would recommend the 1901 for afternoon tea ,lunch/dinner or just drinks.

The room itself is very grand and there's a good atmosphere and it kind of works very well in a strange way. The service was fine although the waitress couldn't seem to understand why we wanted to chat before ordering and hence asked us every 30 seconds. The food and drink is way over priced and very small portions. The chef tries to combien very unusual flavours and they just don't work. No one should serve delicate fish with a kind of tomato relish and greasy cream sauce, the vegetables well deliberately well undercooked and cold with more grease. I can't criticise totally as they experience was enjoyable but maybe that was the company. The Recommended Austrian wine was lovely and good value, the Billy Cart Salmon champagne was overpriced at £20 a glass. The potential of this place is enormous but they need a new chef.

A stunningly beautiful room, the setting is the king here. Food was competently cooked (scallops, then beef), the ingredients clearly being of high quality. Staff were charming and efficient. Yes it is expensive but the opulent setting makes it feel well worth it. I would certainly return, either with clients or for a quiet treat with friends.

I booked 1901 after reading Square Meal’s glowing review and couldn’t believe it had received a star. Although the staff were numerous and desperate to please, the service was haphazard and slow. The standard of food was average with tiny portions and high prices. My guests paid for the meal and I was left feeling embarrassed to have made the recommendation. Square Meal mentions ‘live music’. Not on this evening when we were subjected to soft orchestral piped music, with a horrible version of ‘Je t’aime’ coming through the speakers on arrival! My only positive comment would be that the room is beautiful with a magnificent stained glass ceiling from the hotel’s days as a grand railway hotel but the atmosphere is about as warm as a station waiting room.
