SquareMeal Review of Zobler's at The Ned

This New York-style Jewish deli is housed within Soho House’s new City hotel and dining complex, The Ned. Zobler’s self-service counter offers the likes of smoked fish and traditional Reuben sandwiches (corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing), while sweet-toothed diners can tuck in to classic cheesecakes. Named after architect Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens (who designed it in the 1920s), The Ned used to be Midland Bank’s HQ. Reimagined as a hotel and leisure hub, this sprawling building’s ground-floor restaurants are laid out in the former banking hall, mostly occupying one, open-plan area.

After seeing an add for the new Ned Hotel, I decided to wander one in one day during my work lunch. I was very pleasantly surprised to see a New York Jewish Deli inside. I was very pleasantly suprised with the menu and quality of food. I have tried about a half dozen New York Jewish restaurants around London. Most make decent attempts at Jewish comfort food but none of them quite taste like the real delis of New York. Zoblers, bucks that trend and does all the details of the food the way I would expect in New York. On my first trip their I got a turkey melt on a sesame bagel. The bagel was chewy, heavily seeded, and toasted and came overstuffed with flavourful turkey and melted American cheese. My fiance ordered their smoke salmon sandwich which came on an equally tasty poppy seed bagel, overstuffed with salmon, cream cheese, and capers. We finished the meal off with black and white cookies - staple of New York delis. Not only is Zoblers, by far the most authentic New York deli I have had in London, but it packs a punch against some of the best ones I have been to back in the US.

OK so Zobler's.....just came back from lunch with some colleagues; 1. chicken soup should be in a BOWL not a tiny thimble that someone thinks resembles an actual soup bowl and then have the cheek to charge £4.50 for it! It was very tasty though :-) 2. one matzah ball is NEVER enough; mind you, if the bowl was an actual bowl, you'd easily fit 2 in there. 3. chopped liver......capers? REALLY? also, there was a hint of vinegar.....no, just no. 4. bagel was hard and chewy. Again, no, just no. 5. my boss had a pastrami sandwich.....it was TINY....seriously painful. 6. Overall, this place seems to want to give a Carnegie's/Katz's/NY deli feel and that's all well and good but portion size doesn't even come close to our cousins across the pond, they need to work on this ASAP. Great atmosphere, very chilled, beautiful decor, friendly staff.
