SquareMeal Review of Victoria Inn Peckham

This refurbed Peckham favourite enjoys a prime spot on the corner of bustling Bellenden Road, a hip hangout for south London foodies. Its menu features updated classics such as Camden Hells beer-battered haddock and a Dexter burger with Welsh rarebit and Bovril mayonnaise, though if you fancy pushing culinary boundaries further, opt for baked crab with scrumpy-fried oysters, or a perfectly cooked rib-eye with mushroom duxelles and a heart-stoppingly rich yet deeply flavoured herb-crusted bone marrow. Other trump cards were a sticky date and banana pudding, and a faultless malted chocolate fondant. To drink, an enticing selection of real ales and a wine list that includes half a dozen ‘living wines’ (organic, biodynamic and ‘born rather than manufactured’) also please local hipsters. There’s a comfy, lived-in vibe at the Victoria, created by touches of bare brick, steel-grey walls, mismatched furniture and warm lighting – both families and young revellers flock here.

We've lived close to The Vic for 6 years and experienced it under its various guises. Newly renovated we were hoping for better staff and an exciting new menu. The first day we visited was opening day and we went for lunch. The staff and kitchen were clearly under pressure and we waited an age for food. We were compensated with the offer of free drinks. When the food arrived our burgers were totally cremated and had to be sent back to the kitchen. If you are taking kids the kids menu is a bit off beat. Hard bits of cauliflower in the Mac cheese for example. Ours didn't even like the fish and chips as it was just so greasy. A second visit left us with the same problem with the burgers, a third visit wrong food orders and a fourth a luke warm roast beef lunch (which they did change though the roast potatoes were awful and tasted stale). The restaurant waiting staff seem not to have a clue what's going on and every question you ask them they have to run off and ask someone else. That's when you can get their attention, there are many of them but they all seem to run around looking busy but not catching customers eyes!! The refit is actually really nice it's just a shame the forementioned lets it down.
