SquareMeal Review of
A fixture on Portobello Market for around a decade, this popular sushi operation – its name refers to an ancient Japanese practice of training cormorant birds to catch fish – has opened new premises across the road. What was formerly Shannons, a shabby Irish pub, has been gutted: reborn as a smart bar in muted tones and minimalist attire. Plum wine, Japanese whiskies and a range of saké are now served, along with draught Asahi beer, accessible wines and Eurasian cocktails. Expect Saképolitan and Tokyo twists on Dry Martini and Bloody Mary, and snack on spiced edamame beans, gyoza, crispy squid tempura, or tofu, seaweed and spring onions. The forte, though, is the selection of nigiri – prawn, octopus, chilli beef, etc – and sashimi (£5.75 for spicy salmon), plus traditional uramaki and hosomaki rolls. Prefer something filling and hot? Noodle soup is another option at this unfussy, informal izakaya staffed by smiley faces.
