SquareMeal Review of The Victoria

With a popular primary school behind and some of Richmond’s largest houses around the corner, The Victoria has its market on its doorstep. From breakfast to supper time, the place hums with activity, though is seldom overstretched. Celeb chef Paul Merrett’s menu ticks all the right boxes – properly poached eggs and decent coffee to start the day, moving on to appealing bar nibbles and snacks (almonds, king prawns a la plancha, chorizo) or a full-on menu. Merrett’s cooking has always been a draw, and with the likes of pan-fried sea trout on mussel and celeriac chowder, high-quality steaks with proper béarnaise sauce, and a Sunday slow-roast pork with apple sauce, he’s keeping everyone happy. The large enclosed playground allows children to let off steam at the weekend while their frazzled parents pore gratefully over the wine list or sample one of the cask ales from a choice line-up.

I went there for a quiet business lunch in a pub and I was surprised by the quality of the food. We had two starters each and they were delicious. They make some delicious soft drinks too. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Definitely somewhere to go back to when I have more time to enjoy a leisurely afternoon.

Somehow we managed to wangle a booking here on Mothers' Day 2012, only a few weeks before the event. The staff couldn't have been more helpful at getting us a table and we were happy to get there for 12noon. It was a cold day, and we were chilly, so asked for the heating to be turned up. The staff were so helpful, and the owner arrived a few minutes later with a portable blow heater which warmed us up a treat. The food was outstanding. Although my four year old wasn't keen on the pitta bread, I thought it was the best I'd ever tasted (clearly not the commercial stuff she's used to!). The kitchen seemed to be happy to tweak the food to our needs, making my soft boiled egg set instead of runny. They also brought different bread for my four year old so she could demolish her hummous. The tilapia was outstanding, perfectly cooked and moist, and the vegetables underneath it sweet and to the bite. My niece's chicken and risotto was polished off, as was my mother in law's beef (a bit rare for her taste but looked utterly perfect to me). The thrice cooked chips were stupendous and should be ordered no matter what! The small ones had salted caramel ice cream for pudding, which was stupendous. My chocolate fudge cake with chantilly cream was delicious – though I'd have liked it to be a little softer, less dense, and therefore not quite so rich. Certainly didn't stop me polishing it off though! My husband's bakewell tart disappeared very quickly too. Drinks were fab – childrens' smoothies delicious, my glass of Mahi sauvignon blanc a triumph. Add to that frequent visits to the playground by the littlies, and the supply of proper colouring books and a big pencil case of pens and pencils, I'd say that Victoria has all the boxes ticked. We've been loads. We're going to keep coming, this restaurant is totally worth the journey, with outstanding food and outstanding staff to look after you. Well done the Victoria, please keep on doing what you do, brilliantly. Kia ora.

We had lunch at the victoria on Sunday and we thought it was excellent. It was obviously a local favourite as lots of young families with their kids, and everyone having a happy time. We will return one evening as it looks like it has lots of atmosphere. The staff were delightful and we got excellent service – keep up the good work!!

Following a visit with my Son and a subsequent visit with my wife, I can wholeheartedly recomend the ‘Victoria’ as an ideal place to eat. Mike, the resturant manager found the time to talk to us, a rareity nowadays, following our meal, and gave us an insight into how the resturant has been run since they re-opened under new management and a refit. The Steak I had was excellent, the bernaise was to die for and the ‘thrice fried chips’ were the best chips I've eaten, well done Paul! I would highly recomend this place and strongly suggest you try it, I will certainly look forward to my next visit.

Having been here to celebrate NYE 2008 (which was a complete success) I can say with extreme confidence that you will not find a better pub around, certainly not in South West London. I have been here a number of times now with my girlfriend for dinner, and slowley started to bring friends and family along. The place is warm, very inviting and the staff friendly, but not overly so and welcome you with open arms. Food first then – the menu is not too big and serves classics such as Collar of Bacon and Pan Frid Seabass…the Barbury duck breast is exemplary aswell!! Aside from the dining room menu, there is a bar snack menu, a Saturday bruch menu and a Sunday menu, all consisting of seasonal produce cooked to a very high standard. The wine list is excellent value first and foremost, serving wine by the glass from as little as £2.95. The list is designed by Olly Smith – so no need to question that one! The only thing I would like to see more of is proper ales! The London Pride is superb, clear and very well looked after, but a few more options on the ale front would be nice. All in all, every experience I have had has been different, because of the people I have brought here, but equally as good. Hats off to Paul, Greg and the rest of the team, this place is a country mile above anywhere else – and I have been to many pubs and restaurants this side of the river. Bring on the summer when the rotisserie comes alive and the champagne starts to flow!
