SquareMeal Review of The Opium Den at Nam Long

The Flaming Ferrari cocktail was named after a bunch of high-rolling investment bankers at this flamboyant Paris-Vietnam restaurant. Nam Long has been a haunt of royals, roués and racy women since the 1990s, but is now perhaps a little less riotous for the loss of its colourful original owner, Thai Dang Cao. Nevertheless, the Shaker bar and inscrutable Opium Den – a basement late-late lounge – are still haute Chelsea hangouts worth knowing. Test-drive the aforementioned Ferrari (a rum and Chartreuse-based tipple) for £19, or a more modestly priced Formula One (a vodka and apricot brandy fix) for £11. Non-petrol heads might instead fancy a Bardot (gin, lychee liqueur, rose water and Cherry Heering). Loire Sauvignon Blanc at £17.50 is a steal in such a pricey postcode; ditto Champagne at under £50. Dim sum, crispy pork-belly steamed buns, ribs, ceviche, seafood platters (£19) and shredded chicken salad provide more substantial fuel.
