The Lacy Nook
Adding to Stoke Newington’s quickly-expanding restaurant scene is The Lacy Nook, a neighbourhood spot serving up a menu inspired by the international travels of its owners. Friends Elena Smileva and Jana Miseva have created a menu that fuses seasonal British ingredients with flavours from the Balkans, Middle East and Asia. The two-floor space is flooded with light thanks to the large windows at either end, and there’s an outdoor terrace filled with plants and herbs that are utilised in the cooking. The menu features international dishes, such as beef cevapi – a flatbread filled with mini beef patties, kajmak (a kind of milk spread), fresh sweet onions, and ajvar (a spread made from roasted peppers). Other options include harissa-spiced chicken with date jam and chickpea mayonnaise, and flamed pork rib with apple cider. There’s plenty for veg enthusiasts too, such as charred cauliflower, kidney bean hummus, and roasted aubergine. A concise wine list also plays on the international theme, while in-house cocktails include a white-peach vanilla Margarita and a sage-grapefruit Old Fashioned.
