SquareMeal Review of The Ivy Café Wimbledon Village

Guided by owners Caprice Holdings, The Ivy is taking over London one painfully-chic eatery at a time – including this ‘casual’ Wimbledon Village café, where the full menu of modern brasserie classics is offered. Glamorous golden art-deco interiors and seductive lighting transport you back in time. Combine this with a strict no-photos attitude and you’ll be questioning the restaurant’s definition of casual. Nevertheless, prawn cocktail with creamy avocado (reinventing the 1970s starter) tasted wonderfully fresh and tangy, while a decadent truffle arancini was appetisingly cheesy. Portions can be overpowering, with a chicken Milanese (succulent and egg-topped) filling the plate. An equally sizeable sirloin was melt-in-your-mouth tender. To drink, the crowd-pleasing wine list includes a refreshingly fruity Château d’Esclans. Although the intensely rich dishes might make you feel you need a workout afterwards, prices here are reasonable, service impeccable – and you get the chance to act like you’re hiding from the paps.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas, the Ivy stands out in the heart of Wimbledon Village. We visited in early December; very friendly staff, excellent service, everything on menu was appealing. Friendly hubub rather than noisy. The four of us chose Dover sole, Duck Curry, fishcakes and Shepeherd's pie. Generous helpings to the point where each of us were almost defeated....puddings were superb - Chocolate bombe and a wonderful apple tarte flamed in brandy. Two courses were plenty three would have been too much. Fischcakes and Shepherd's Pie perhaps slightly on the dense side so visit with a big appetite ! Classy but relaxing atmosphere in the signature art deco style. This will be more than a restaurant just for locals.

Overall it was a very good experience, but as only opened recently there are a few points that need to be addressed. Not good to be left outside while the reception check with other personnel about table....could have been raining!! Most of the staff are trained and and have a very confident and professional outlook but some need more guidance as you get the impression of nervousness... White wine left in ice bucket away from table and consequently had to 'catch the eye' of serving staff. But will definitely dine again and recommend ....just teething problems at moment but during the next two weeks of Wimbledon you will be put to the test....Good Luck and I'm sure it will be a great success.
