The Douglas Fir
So popular did Gipsy Hill Brewing Co’s 2015 pop-up prove, it has reopened on a permanent basis. The Douglas Fir is a vision in recycled timbers, distressed furniture, petrol-blue woodwork and bare light bulbs: a ‘short back and sides’ restyle of a former hairdresser’s. Slake your thirst on its widely admired keg and cask ales, such as Hepcat (a light-bodied, grapefruity, session IPA), Southpaw or Beatnik – all from Gipsy Hill. Guests on rotation might include Vibrant Forest Brewery’s Belgian-style Zuur (sour) beer from Hampshire, or Yorkshire stalwart Magic Rock’s beefy bruiser, Big Top: an ‘India red ale’ that packs a wallop, weighing in at 7% abv. Further options include a limited range of premium spirits, a featured draught cider, Prosecco, house red and white (£4 a glass) and beer-sticks. Plenty of banter is also on tap at this lo-fi boozer that’s much admired by locals partial to a premium pint.
