Following its restaurants at HMP Cardiff and High Down in Surrey, the Clink charity has launched a third outlet in the old governor’s house at HMP Brixton. Like its predecessors, this “ground-breaking initiative” serves as a training establishment for inmates and an ‘opportunity for rehabilitation’, with support from local businesses and members of the public. The restaurant is spread over three floors, with a meetings venue attached and a daily menu that’s designed to challenge and inspire – all backed by “incredible service”. Starters of twice-baked goats’ cheese soufflé or seafood terrine with scallops, horseradish emulsion and beetroot crisps might precede chicken bourguignon or sesame-coated duck breast with pak choy in an Asian-style broth, while puds could include chocolate and hazelnut mille-feuille. Note that online reservations for breakfast or lunch can be obtained by visiting the restaurant’s website. “A great cause and even better food.”
My sister and her fiance have been in Prison. Not actually behind bars of course, but to a restaurant located in Brixton Prison. As soon as I heard, I insisted that she write a guest post for me and so without further adieu, a little word from my sister on what life is like on the inside. It isn't all that often that your dining experience is muddled with social responsibility and penal reform, but last week I was fortunate enough to visit The Clink Restaurant Brixton where this particular brand of innovation was dished up in spades! I left feeling positively inspired and curiously determined to get involved; spending the remainder of my week focusing on whatever project management skills, academic background and/or network I may have to bring to this innovative table...you know, those skills that somehow earn me just enough enough pennies to binge and guzzle my way through London, and scamper around...
