Squaremeal Review of Six Portland Road ?

Oli Barker and chef Pascal Wiedemann (key players from Terroirs) hit all the right buttons when they opened this laid-back eatery in 2016: honest, sensibly priced modern cooking combined with cheerful service is proving to be a winning formula. Inside, soothing colours set the mood, with an open kitchen at the rear, a sharing table for casual drop-ins and a bar dispensing specialist beers alongside imaginative European wines – including trendy tipples from trail-blazing importers Les Caves de Pyrène. To eat, we suggest kicking off with some Italian cured meats or glistening ‘petits lucques’ olives, before tackling crab mayonnaise, rabbit and pork terrine or mackerel with romesco sauce and watercress on toast. Spanking-fresh brill is served with sea vegetables, capers and brown butter, while full-flavoured chicken leg comes with artichokes, fennel and aïoli. Proper puddings and perfectly ripe cheeses are further signs of the owners’ effortless all-round professionalism. In short, a great addition to posh W11.

The Advantage of Cheese as a Travelling Companion (Jerome. K. Jerome, Three Men in a Boat)

Small upscale neighbourhood restaurant, well located in pretty Holland Park. Very well prepared food, fresh, tasty and interesting, Long wine list, excellent ambience, perfect service, romantic atmosphere and all round extremely civilised! Two small triangles of cheese without any accompaniment at £8 is hefty but otherwise adequately priced for the high quality. Gladly recommend recommend for date nights or small groups. Please see my blog post of the same title for a longer review.

Date night with the hubby. Actually, what am I saying? Firstly, since the children flew the nest quite a few years ago, the two of us go out so regularly and so enjoyably, that times apart are rarer than times together. Secondly, the word ‘hubby’ is not one I ever use; it reminds me too much of a family anecdote.
My mother was German. She spoke good school English, so after WW2 she worked as a court interpreter for the British Allied Forces in Germany and, because she was a most attractive young woman, she was frequently also asked along to various officers’ functions and parties.
