SquareMeal Review of Sasso

There's nothing remotely flash about Stefano Lancelotti's trattoria unobtrusively buried in a basement beneath Harrogate’s Princes Square – imagine a cross between an old-school ristorante and a new-wave Italian enoteca. Contemporary artwork and polished tables create an understated backdrop for food that is several notches about the provincial norm. Seasonal specials provide a revealing snapshot of the kitchen’s endeavours – perhaps king scallops wrapped in smoked speck on wild mushroom pâté with fresh berries or Yorkshire rib-eye grilled on a typical Bologna-style salamoia with red onion chutney and rocket. Stefano's homemade pasta is also a top call: try ravioli filled with slow-cooked lamb ragù in an artichoke broth or maccheroni in cheese and curry sauce with chicken and crispy bacon. Finish in true Italian style with proper tiramisu, chocolate terrine or pannacotta. Excellent-value set lunches and well-chosen regional wines too.

Lovely restaurant for Authentic Italian food

Visited Sasso restaurant in Harrogate on a Saturday evening during a weekend away with my wife. Lovely place tucked away in the lower ground floors of Princes Square. Lovely staff, great service and very knowledgeable of the wines complementing whichever food you choose. The food was excellent. I chose lasagne as my main course and rather than being made with mince it had Italian sausage inside. It is without doubt the best lasagne I have ever tasted! Delicious!! Tiramisu for dessert was just as good. The bill was at the more expensive end but if you are experiencing quality food & drink then you have to expect to pay for it. We would certainly go back if we visit Harrogate again. Lovely place and completely enjoyed it!

B'day Dinner

The dinner was for 2 for my birthday...little Happy Birtday sprinkles adorned the table. The starters, the mains and the wine were all wonderfully presented , portions were right and the taste was delicious. I had the duck liver patte and she had th egoats cheese salad. My main was the beef stuffed ravioli and hers was the prawn pasta. Both were wonderful. The preliminary chef's samples and bread were also quite tasty. We did not sample the dessert as someone baked a chocolate cake w/chocolate icing from scratch! Service was prompt and efficient...just the right amount. The atmosphere is quaint. The value for money is appropriate. Overall I would give Sasso 5-stars! Thank you for a most enjoyable evening.

Simply of the best
Dined here for the first time with some long lost friends from the North-East. The service was friendly, homely but also very professional. The food surpassed our expectations and we are already considering working our way through the menu. It was an excellent, unhurried meal and if there was only one thing that could be improved upon and that would be the coffee. But saying that after the food fest just experienced it didn't really matter! (The dessert was the icing on the cake. Well worth a visit just for that!)
