SquareMeal Review of San Carlo Cicchetti Piccadilly

Piccadilly’s regeneration is well and truly under way – as evidenced by this shiny new branch of the San Carlo chain, which delivers casual but effortlessly elegant all-day dining with great panache. Behind the shop-like frontage runs a modern, Venetian-style marbled bar that overlooks the dining area, while an open kitchen and wood-burning oven at the back add some fun and theatre to proceedings. It’s all attractively done, with warm bright lights and contemporary leather chairs, buffed by polished and naturally hospitable Italian service and a cheery crowd. Small-ish plates (mainly in the £6-9 range), tout classy regional favourites such as pappardelle with Tuscan porcini, ravioli filled with truffle and pecorino, first-rate rack of lamb and excellent grilled cod with a pesto crust and lentils. In short, this place is slick, stylish and bang on-the-money.

Wow, wow and wow. Italian tapas is the best way to describe Cicchetti. I have been on a table for 2 all the way up to 10 and each time the service was superb and all delivered with a smile. Having been a few times, I asked what the knack was and it seems that Carlo and Marcello, (the father and son team who own and run the San Carlo/Cicchetti brand) source the best ingredients and have more than enough staff at any one time. The truffle ravioli is an absolute must and the short rib of beef is not far behind. Always busy with a mix of 'walk-in's' and regulars. Everyone we've ever taken, continues to return of their own volition. Italian food as it should be – superbly cooked and served by smiling Italians. Great location tops off the whole experience. Go try it !

Tapas style small dishes were all very good. Decor was nice but little bit touristy. Service was rushed.
