Surbiton's previous claim to fame was as home to 70s TV sitcom The Good Life, but it now has a new talking point thanks to the arrival of the boys from Marylebone hit Purl. Occupying a shabby-chic coffee-and-cocktails joint called Rubi and done out like a faux Edwardian, gentleman's study, this evenings-only drinking den brings some fine fixes to London's outer fringes, so expect a regularly refreshed roster of Purl classics and modernities – perhaps a Piña Colada with pineapple-infused rum and coconut water in the mix or ‘a twist’ on Negroni that muddles marmalade vodka, vermouth and Aperol. Otherwise, suburban sybarites are sure to be lured by Rubi rinses such as a lemon, mango and vodka Bellini, Mai Thai (sic) and Glitter Gatsby (Bombay Sapphire gin, ginger, lemongrass, Prosecco and glitter).
