Pearl Liang is not your normal Chinese drop-in. Firstly, there’s the room – a subterranean space that makes up for its lack of natural light with sexy purple upholstery and snazzy flower-blossom designs. Then there’s the ‘sublime’ cooking, which goes the extra mile for authenticity as it romps through the Chinese regional repertoire, taking in everything from excellent crispy duck with homemade pancakes to sweet-and-sour chicken jazzed up with pomegranate. Premium seafood also abounds – from steamed razor clams and scallops stuffed with crabmeat to a hatful of turbot specialities – and the kitchen is happy to go walkabout for the likes of lobster sashimi. The lengthy line-up of dim sum is a lunchtime crowd-puller (think prawn and radish dumplings, chicken’s feet, fried octopus cakes and BBQ pork puffs), and there are some classic cocktails for a post-work refresher.

I don’t normally like to leave negative feedback about independent restaurants but unfortunately not much option in this case. We booked for a large group of 12 including children for lunch at 12:30pm and left credit card details as a deposit as requested by the restaurant. The day before the booking, the restaurant contacted us to say that we had to be at the restaurant for 12pm and we would need to leave the table by 2pm as another group were now booked in for 2:15pm. We called back and said that we could not arrive any earlier than 12:30pm as some of our party were travelling some distance, and was told that we would still need to vacate the table by 2pm. We said we could not eat in 90 minutes, especially with several young children and it was a get-together so didn’t want to have to leave immediately after eating. We were offered another option to use their private room but the manager insisted that we commit to a £40 per head spend. When I said that it is unreasonable that we have to pay extra due to the restaurant’s mistake, the manager said basically take it or leave it and refused to offer a reasonable alternative or honour the original reservation. At no time were we informed that the booking was timed or that we had to vacate the table by a set time. However, the manager didn’t seem to care, repeating that “...Sunday is a busy day”. I have given the restaurant 2 out of 5 as I have heard the food is good, atmosphere is ok, not cheap, but the management leaves a lot to be desired and seem happy to act unreasonably and let people down, despite having taken a booking several weeks earlier. It’s obvious that they are trying to turn tables and cram in as many customers as possible, but the restaurant needs to inform customers of their strict time slot policies at the time of booking, not 24 hours before in the hope that it is too late for the patrons to cancel their reservation and find another restaurant (luckily we found another great Chinese restaurant that could take our booking on short notice). Think the management also needs a crash course in customer services. We certainly will not be attempting to visit again.
