SquareMeal Review of
Fulham Broadway is the site for the first UK branch of McGettigans, a family-run chain of modern Irish pub and sports-bar hybrids found across the Emerald Isle, the Middle East and in Midtown Manhattan. The glitzy decor has nary a shamrock nor auld shillelagh in sight, incorporating an ersatz library and a luridly lit woodland dell. Apart from Guinness and a few Irish whiskies on display, the bar’s Hibernian heritage is understated; instead of Black Velvet, you’ll discover Sex on the Beach and Mojito on the brief cocktail list. Draught beers are prosaic, and mainstream wines start at £17. To eat, there are crowd-pleasers such as tapas boards, Asian duck, salmon Niçoise or pulled pork quesadillas followed by honeycomb and hazelnut Eton mess; colcannon aside, the food hardly screams ‘traditional Irish’. Despite this, lunchtime meal deals, live gigs and sport on the bar’s TV screens appear to pull in punters.
