SquareMeal Review of
Kyoto Sushi & Grill
The fact that the owner of this “absolutely outstanding” Japanese restaurant (reputedly) gets up at 3am every morning to visit the fish markets in London proves his “wonderful commitment” to the freshest seafood. Back in the kitchen, fans say every dish is spot-on, whether you want some sparkling fresh yellowtail nigiri, grilled eel with cucumber or a bowl of udon noodles. Other picks from the long menu range from ika karaage (deep-fried baby squid with wasabi mayo and lemongrass) or kimuchi jijimi (a pan-fried fermented vegetable pancake) to salmon teriyaki and korooke (Japanese sweet potato ‘hash browns’ cooked tempura-style). Katsu curries and donburi rice bowls are good calls (try the pork cutlets with egg sauce), while desserts are limited to Japanese ice creams. There isn’t much in the way of decor, but this is “stunningly good” cuisine – “very fresh, very wonderful, very good value”.
