SquareMeal Review of Imperial City

Slap bang in the City heartland, this plush oriental restaurant impresses with its setting and its business-accented schtick. The vaulted brick and stone cellar of the porticoed behemoth that is the Royal Exchange has been enhanced by low lighting, opulent upholstery and parquet flooring. The menu, too, looks appealing, offering a Chinese-based repertoire that nips over borders to South-East Asia. So, alongside razor clams in piquant chilli and black-bean sauce, you’ll find starters of BBQ chicken satay or even teriyaki eel fillet. Deal-clinching lobster banquets are in place for second course, before the likes of red chicken curry, stir-fried ostrich fillet, or that Sichuan classic, sea spice aubergine. Desserts such as chocolate fondue confirm our belief that flavours here are geared to western palates.

revist to, historically, one of my fav Chinese resturants in the city proved a very bad move Service and general attitude of staff surly and everything too much trouble mixed platter starter at best mediocre although efficiently delivered and at least hot. main meal of Chicken red curry - more like warm chicken in granular mud with no heat + prawn in black bean sauce - absolutely flavourless, black beans seemingly dropped into the mix for aesthetic purposes only. overall real shame but in conclusion very poor....AVOID

I had Cantonese duck for main. The duck was quite hard and chewy. Charsiu which came with the duck was also neither tender nor sweet. The waitress was very attentive and the venue was nice but I was disappointed with food.

10 yrs ago I visited this restaurant. I was there again last night. So I ordered the dish I remember most (Crispy Aromatic Duck with Pancakes) and it was delicious. The food and service were very good and I had a lovely time. Thank you.

Been here a few times over the years. Todays experience will be my last, food was 4th rate, the service robotlike and the bill far to high for what was had, this place needs a wake up call…far better places in the City.

Very serviceand the decor is rather interesting being somewhat out of a Ming emporer's palace. The menu has the usual fare in addition to more exotic options such as the crocodile meat. Rather decent value for money too considering the location.
