SquareMeal Review of Hush Mayfair

Tucked away in the heart of busy Mayfair, with a spacious outside terrace and a menu which isn’t eye wateringly-expensive, Hush is somewhat of a rare find. Once inside, leather banquette seating, a marble-topped bar and backlit displays remind you where you are, but the buzzy atmosphere remains warm and unpretentious. Friendly staff are happy to recommend picks from the lengthy menu, which includes adventurous dishes like the hearty confit duck shepherd’s pie, and an impressive cacio e pepe pasta, which is made in a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese at the table. We’d also suggest making a beeline for the monkfish which successfully combines a fiery topping of grilled chorizo with the gentle, clean flavours of the fish and a helping of earthy white beans. Be sure to save room for the stand-out mars bar cheesecake, which is an intense, velvety dream. When the sun’s shining, make the most of Hush’s cobbled courtyard by enjoying a Peach Spritz and some deep fried, feta-stuffed olives, just be sure to book ahead for an outdoor table. Afternoon tea, a private dining room and a separate upstairs bar complete the picture.

Do you know that Champagne grows on trees? At least is does in the Hush Courtyard. My friend and I went for a girly dinner in the late summer and were lucky enough to get a table outside on one of the nicest nights of the year. The wait staff are lovely - when they are paying attention. Generally they seem to be a bit ditzy or completely absent. We had to wait 20 mins just to get our drinks order taken and the food took an age. That being said, we were there for a good gossip and a catch up so we weren't in a rush, but we were hungry and after sitting down at 2000, we didn't get our food until 2130. Most restaurants would be turning your table at that point, so if you go, prepare to settle in. However, when it finally arrived, the lobster tagliolini was worth the wait and thank god it was already de-shelled, as I was wearing white pants. There is only one veggie option on the menu, which dictated my friend's choice, but she was extremely happy with it. All in all, a lovely place to linger.

I've been to Hush a few times and it's always been great. The location is perfect, close to Oxford Street and just off busy Bond Street but in a quiet courtyard that feels almost like a secret. It has a lovely covered outdoor seating area that's very pleasant in the summer. The staff are always friendly, courteous and helpful. The food is of a good standard for the price and area and the Aspen Fries are delish, definitely a must order! There is also a bar area upstairs that I haven't been to (but keep meaning to go to) that looks really nice.

I walked into Hush at 12.15 needing a quiet table for 1pm the same day to conduct a lunchtime interview with a talented jazz singer. The staff were incredibly polite, welcoming, and helpful and although the best tables by the windows were already booked I was able to reserve a discreet table for two in a corner. By the time my guest arrived we had been upgraded to the best table in the room and spent the next 3 hours very happily in discussion. The recommended bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc was excellent, the food was wonderful and inventive, and the service was perfect – always there and yet never intrusive. Since neither of us felt able to tackle a main course, we had two starters each – delicious lentil soup with welsh rarebit, a fantastic globe artichoke with a wild salad poking out of the top like a wild hair-do, and carpaccio of beef sliced so thinly it simply melted in the mouth. Nor could we resist the amazing salted caramel ice-cream and the intriguing Mars bar cheesecake which we feel may have had a crushed Snickers hiding in the biscuit base. We left at 4pm, an hour later than we intended, feeling incredibly light-hearted and well-fed but not too full. They even had soft Brazilian jazz playing in the background. Hush Hush – it's how I've always imagined a cocoon might feel like and it was such a shame we had to leave.
