SquareMeal Review of Horseshoe Hotel

Egton Bridge sits in a wooded valley seven miles southwest of Whitby and is a stop on the picturesque Esk Valley railway line. It’s also famous for the Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show, which has been held continuously in the village hall since 1800. The hotel’s new licensees are actually old ones who have returned here after several years away, and they’ve fitted in like an old glove, offering simple home-cooked food and providing Theakston’s, Black Sheep and Copper Dragon ale on draught. It’s simple and uncluttered inside, but the best thing about the Horseshoe is the garden, where mature trees and lawns are laid out around the 18th-century stone building – all within spitting distance of the bubbling river Esk. Not to be confused with Ye Olde Horseshoe Inn in Egton.
